Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Presents Dracula

10/27/2017 - 10/29/2017 Benedum Center for the Performing Arts, 237 7th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

Over Halloween weekend, PBT brings back the deliciously spine-chilling Dracula, based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic novel – the original vampire drama. Dissatisfied with his bevy of undead brides, Count Dracula fixates on Svetlana, a young girl on the cusp of engagement, to satiate his thirst for fresh blood. A haunting score by Franz Liszt builds suspense while scenic designer Thomas Boyd’s fastidious studies of Balkan and Romanian architecture add authenticity to the 19th-century Transylvanian setting. The dancing also has teeth, with levitation, flying and pyrotechnics that make the choreography even more climactic. At the time of its premiere, the New York Times described it as a “spectacle of an order ballet audiences seldom see today.”

Sharif Bey: Dialogues in Clay and Glass

3/2/2018 @ 10:00AM - 12:00 AM - 5/6/2018 Pittsburgh Glass Center

Sharif Bey’s work cross-references notions of power, ornamentation, and natural history with objects and surfaces associated with traditional African jewelry. He uses his work to explore alternative ways of paying respect to tradition, function, adornment, and ceremony. His exhibition showcases his large-scale ceramic necklace wall hangings and a series of necklace forms made from large glass beads. Bey said, “I look forward to exploring the different relationship with light that the glass beads will have in contrast to the ceramic beads.” In addition, the expanded color palette in glass opens up possibilities in his work not currently available in ceramic glazes.   This exhibition coincides with the 2018 National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Conference in Pittsburgh taking place March 14-17 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Get more details at  http:\/\/nceca.net\/
