The Best Places in Pittsburgh to Get a Fish Sandwich

With Lent here and the Pittsburgh tradition of consuming giant fish sandwiches underway, we wanted to offer up a few great eateries and bars that we think have some of the best and biggest fish sandwiches in town.  The Lenten season is from Wednesday, February 14 to Thursday, March 29, so hurry up and catch one of those Orca-sized sandwiches before they get away.  Also, be sure to check out our local Pittsburgh fish fry list below.

Wholey’s Fish Market

If you go to Wholey's you must order one of their famous hanging over-the-bun-sized wild caught Icelandic cod sandwiches, it won't disappoint and you will be full. Other items on the menu include whiting, crab cakes, soft shell crabs and delicious shrimp and oyster po' boys.  If you really want to reel in the big one try the "Holey Moley" which is 1 pound of battered dip cod on a bun.

The Penn Avenue Fish Company has so many varieties of fish sandwiches on their menu that you could go back every Friday during Lent and still not have eaten them all. All sandwiches are served on ciabatta bread with slaw and a deli side.  We recommend the Yellowfin Tuna Teriyaki or the Happy Jack.

Although Max's is generally known for it's great German fare, don't overlook the giant Pittsburgh fish sandwich.  It is a generous fresh fillet-of-cod dipped in Max’s seasoned breading and fried to a golden brown.  Pair one with a cold Hacker-Pschorr in a mason jar and you'll see why Max's is on our list.

Steel City Samiches Bar & Grille is on the outskirts of the 'Burgh in Indiana, PA but it still has Steel City flavor. It was recently featured by Casey Webb of Food Network's Man vs. Food.  SCS offers two tasty fish sandwiches. THE MON-STER which is beer battered cod & American cheese, piled high with fresh cut fries, slaw, and tomatoes and the COLOSSAL COD SANDWICH which is a beer battered fish filet with American cheese and tartar sauce and slaw.  Take a ride out to Indiana, PA for one of the best fish sandwiches in the Pittsburgh area.
